FALL 2013 AYURVEDIC CLEANSING INFO BLOG
Ayurvedic Cleanse: Designed to clean up and clean out!!
As faith would have it, our bodies are naturally designed to eliminate toxins via stool, urine and sweat on a daily basis. However, with inappropriate daily routines, lifestyle, environmental influences, stress, and less than optimal eating habits, the ‘sludge’ literally builds up in the system, causing sluggishness within the elimination process.
Can you conceptualize the smell of rotten stagnation and toxicity that builds up over time??
In Ayurveda, this build up of impurities in the body is referred to as “Ama’. Although Ama is a natural occurrence as a byproduct of breaking down of nutrients, we want to minimize the amount of waste material in our bodies.
When we think of ingesting, we tend to focus on the colon, where much of our intake of food is processed. The potential of Ama build up in the colon is regarded as a root cause of many symptoms and manifestations of poor health.
The Ayurvedic Approach to Cleansing:
An Ayurvedic cleanse renews your body on all levels. Even though the colon (as mentioned above) is an important site of Ama, we must also consider ALL of our sensory experiences –– food, information, emotions, relationships, pollutants within the environment, physical activity, sleep patterns, individual habits and/or hobbies as part of the overall make up on the body. We are a product of EVERYTHING we ingest, including all aspects of our sensory perception. If the “indigestion” of all these exposures leads to ama, then what function of the body is responsible for digestion it? Ayurveda calls this function the ‘agni’, or digestive fire. In a healthy colon, agni is the digestive fire that can process whatever comes along, drawing out nutrition and letting go of the waste. With respect to thoughts and emotions, a balanced agni converts the information into wisdom, without leaving any residue. Even a healthy digestive fire can become overwhelmed when the things it must process come in fast and furious, leading to poorly digested materials which form noxious residues, and are then deposited in various bodily tissues.
“Even when wholesome food is taken in proper quantity, it does not get digested properly due to anxiety, grief, fear, anger, uncomfortable bed, and vigil.” ~Caraka Samhita
A complete and formal Ayurvedic cleanse is called Panchakarma and must be done under the supervision of a trained Ayurvedic Practitioner. However, we have put together the basic principles of an Ayurvedic Cleanse Kit, to allow you a safe and effective experience for an ‘at home’ cleanse.
What is the Importance of Seasonal Cleansing?
Whenever there is a seasonal shift, there are climactic, cultural, and dietary changes that go along with it. Ideally, it is best to cleanse during the juncture, or transitional period between the changing of the seasons. Primarily, this helps to reduce or eliminate the residue of accumulation of the previous season, as well as preparing the body and mind for the next season to come. In Ayurveda, this is considered a form of svasta vrita (establishing good health within ones’ self) or preventative medicine, so that imbalances in the body don’t occur. Fall Cleanse is an easy way to re-establish your health and protect your well-being for the coming months and beyond.
Ayurvedic Cleanse Diet
The foundation of an Ayurvedic cleanse is a simple diet. When the digestive system rests, the body can focus its energy on processing and releasing the impurities that have built up. Simultaneously, new impurities don’t build because you don’t consume unhealthy or difficult to digest foods.
